Since publication of the first print runs of Year 11 English: Western Australia and Year 12 English: Western Australia, certain specifications with respect to the Examination Brief have changed.
In relation to Section One: Comprehending, the number of questions available has been reduced from three to two. As the questions remain equally weighted, they are each now worth 15% of the examination total. The nature of the expected concise short answer response of 200-300 words for each question remains unchanged. The Examination Brief now states:
Questions can require the candidate to comprehend and analyse unseen written and visual texts and respond concisely.
The stimulus material consists of two unseen texts where one text is a written text and the second text is a:
The texts exclude poetry and drama.
The questions are of equal weighting. Each question requires the candidate to respond in approximately 200–300 words. One question can require comparison between Section One texts.
These changes to our textbooks have been made to reflect this alteration to the Examination Brief. In addition, minor edits were made to the explanation of the structure of short answer responses. These edits offer clarification of the two types of structures for short answer responses that are typically produced by students in the WACE examination. That is, a single integrated paragraph or, alternatively, a thesis statement followed by two or three concise paragraphs. These two approaches were already reflected in the text, and edits made were for clarification purposes only.
